MDP School Community Service Project

MDP School is initiating a community service project to provide technology training to adults in our local area. Using our well equipped computer lab, the MDP Computer Club consisting of interested Middle School students under the supervision of faculty advisors will work with adult participants as tutors and instructors in technology areas related to general computer use, a variety of computer applications such as email and Facebook, Word, MS Movie Maker and Photo Story, and tools such as MS Photo Editor to allow participants to stay close to family and friends by sharing messages, photos and videos. There will be no cost to the participants.

Each participant will receive a 4GB flash drive at the first class session. The flash drive will contain all of these instructional modules, some test files (documents and photos) which will be used during some of the lessons, and will also allow participants to save files they create during class.

During the class sessions, a student will sit with each program participant, coaching participants in the use features and procedures associated with the task being taught. Three faculty advisors, including the school’s Technology teacher, will oversee the students and will help or instruct in cases where a situation, problem, or question is beyond the capability of a student instructor to resolve.

For the first few offerings of this six-session introductory course, we will be flexible in exactly what will be completed each session. Also, we have scheduled a seventh class session as a “make-up” session to allow us to complete any unfinished activities, if necessary, and answer any lingering questions participants may have at the end of the course. A future advanced course series is expected to be developed to present topics such as blogging, Twitter, and other Web 2.0 tools that can enhance the experiences of the participants in communicating with friends and family. We will encourage Computer Club students to submit ideas, feedback, suggestions, and changes based on their experiences in their one-on-one interactions with the course participants so that we may fine-tool the presentations and instruction for future offerings of this course.
